Every Straw Hat Pirates' Dream, Explained

Jun 25, 2023

Monkey D. Luffy and the rest of his Straw Hat Pirate crew have big dreams, and they plan to reach them on their way to discovering the One Piece.

In the world of One Piece, few things are more powerful than someone who follows their dreams. The history of the Grand Line is defined by brave individuals who pursued their goals, ranging from kind-hearted legends like Gol D. Roger to ruthlessly ambitious cutthroats such as Rocks D. Xebec.

Given the success that the Straw Hat Pirates have experienced, it should come as no surprise that Monkey D. Luffy and his crew all possess unique aspirations. Their rapid growth throughout the series largely stems from their ambition, and even when faced with dire circumstances, they cling to these dreams as if their lives depend on them.

As seen throughout One Piece, fish-men and merfolk consistently experience discrimination at the hands of humans who live above the sea. Many members of their species are regularly taken as slaves by the World Government, while others are trafficked on the black market by outlaws. Because of these atrocities, Jinbe hopes to one day resolve the issues between humans and the people of Fish-Man Island.

Despite his status as a wanted pirate, Jinbe is an extremely honorable person with empathy for those that he encounters. He and Monkey D. Luffy share an intense resentment of the way fish-men are treated, and by the end of One Piece, it's likely that they will have liberated the people of the sea from centuries of oppression.

When the Straw Hat Pirates travel to Thriller Bark, they quickly encounter Brook, the skeletal musician. Years ago, the Humming Swordsman ate the Revive-Revive Fruit, allowing him to be reborn after his death. However, while the rest of the Rumbar Pirates passed away decades before the events of One Piece, one of his oldest friends still awaits his return — Laboon the Whale.

Laboon previously encountered the Straw Hat Pirates after they traveled through Reverse Mountain, but at that point, Brook wasn't sailing with the crew. Brook promised Laboon that he would reunite with the whale after navigating the Grand Line, so after being informed that his old companion still awaits his return, Brook's determination to do so has only grown more fervent.

The Roger Pirates' ship, the Oro Jackson, is one of the finest vessels to ever sail the Grand Line. Built by Tom — Franky and Iceberg's mentor — the Oro Jackson stands as the fish-man's finest achievement. In an effort to pay homage to his mentor, Franky works to build a ship worthy of carrying the next King of the Pirates.

After meeting Monkey D. Luffy, Franky constructs the Thousand Sunny and joins the Straw Hat Pirate's crew. With Luffy as their captain and the Thousand Sunny as their ship, the Straw Hat Pirates are well on their way to conquering the Grand Line and honoring Franky's beloved mentor.

One Piece is full of mysteries, yet none are more central to the themes of the series than the events of the Void Century. The 100-year gap in history not only coincides with the World Government's rise to power but also the destruction of the Great Kingdom. Nico Olvia and the archeologists of Ohara were killed to suppress any information about this history, ultimately inspiring Olvia's daughter, Robin, to continue her efforts.

When the Straw Hat Pirates encounter Nico Robin during the Alabasta Saga, she has all but given up on her dream of uncovering the world's true history. However, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates' display of loyalty at Enies Lobby reignites her motivations, and since being rescued from CP9, she's worked tirelessly to honor her mother's memory.

Tony Tony Chopper is primarily inspired by two separate mentors: Dr. Kureha and Dr. Hiriluk. Although the two doctors are polar opposites in terms of personality, they share a similar open-mindedness that eventually led them both to Chopper. Together, they teach the young reindeer about what it means to be a medical professional, inspiring him to embrace the study of medicine with open arms.

As a doctor, Tony Tony Chopper's dream is to find a cure for every disease in the world. While this is no easy task, the Straw Hat Pirate's medical skills are incredible — he's even able to create an antidote for complex viruses like Queen's Ice Oni in a matter of minutes. Should Chopper learn many more skills during his time in the New World, he'll almost certainly achieve his life-long goal.

The greatest chefs often want to work with the finest ingredients, and in this regard, Sanji is no exception. The talented cook grows up fantasizing about the legendary All Blue, a sea that is said to house fish from all the world's different oceans.

Finding the All Blue is no easy feat — the Straw Hat Pirates have heard virtually no mention of the location since entering the New World. However, the location is far too integral to Sanji's character to simply forget about, so perhaps its secrets will be discovered when Monkey D. Luffy and his crew finally sail to the end of the Grand Line.

Since being introduced during the Syrup Village Arc, Usopp has been characterized as one of the weakest members of the Straw Hat Pirates. The sniper lacks the bravery that most of the Straw Hat Pirates exhibit, but somehow, he counteracts his cowardly tendencies with an intense desire to become a brave warrior of the sea.

When Usopp encounters Broggy and Dorry at Little Garden, he mentions that his dream is to visit their home island of Elbaf and prove himself as a true warrior. The Straw Hat Pirates are closer than ever to the location, making it entirely possible that Usopp will achieve his goal in the near future.

In order to traverse the Grand Line, a pirate crew must include a skilled navigator. Luckily for the Straw Hat Pirates, Nami is one of the most talented cartographers in One Piece history. The former cat burglar grew up making maps for the Arlong Pirates and continues the practice after officially joining the Straw Hat Pirates.

As the Straw Hat Pirates approach the end of the Grand Line, Nami inches closer to her goal of mapping the world's oceans. Considering her success thus far, it's almost certain that she'll be the first character to chart a course to the strange island known as Laugh Tale.

Some One Piece characters possess complex motivations, but when it comes to Roronoa Zoro, there is one thing on his mind: becoming the World's Strongest Swordsman. The first mate of the Straw Hat Pirates has professed this goal since his first appearance on-screen, and as the Raid on Onigashima draws to a close, he seems closer than ever to achieving his dream.

Following his defeat of King the Conflagration, few characters stand in the way of Zoro achieving his ultimate goal. Now that all three forms of Haki are firmly under his control, the three-sword-style fighter is an opponent that stands a chance against even the current No.1 swordsman, Dracule Mihawk.

For many years, most One Piece fans thought that Monkey D. Luffy's dream was to earn the right to be called the King of the Pirates. However, as the series has continued, it's become increasingly clear that the Straw Hat Pirates' long-term goal remains a mystery.

As young children, Luffy, Sabo, and Ace all confided their respective dreams to one another. When Sabo and Ace hear their younger brother's aspirations, they burst into laughter — a similar response is seen when Luffy tells his crew. Whatever his dream may be, it's certain to resonate with his goal of becoming the freest person in the Grand Line.
